PETERSBURG Heart of the Appomattox Basin |
|
Located on the banks of the Appomattox River, Petersburg grew from the former Fort Henry, established in 1645. Years later, the Port of Petersburg became renowned as a commercial center. Petersburg is one of the oldest cities in the United States. In 1998 Petersburg celebrated it's 250th Anniversary. It is fortunate to possess one of the largest collections of historic architecture in the nation. A visit to the Petersburg Visitors Center is a must. It displays literature on Petersburg and information on the whole state of Virginia.
